General Position Summary

  • The Shelter Program Assistant to directly assist Shelter Program Officer and support the field shelter teams in Jere, Borno state, under THRIVE programs.
  • This position has an interface with Mercy Corps’ operations & finance departments, field management, team leader, protection & gender and MEL internally and SC/CCCM sector, LGA level stakeholders and service contractors externally.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Assisting the shelter technical team in facilitating community consultation sessions for shelter and Settlements interventions.
  • Engaging with target participants, CRCs/CRGs to consult their shelter & settlements training and orientation needs.
  • Planning with technical trainers within team to meet the shelter and settlements related training / orientation needs.
  • Mobilizing communities to schedule the training sessions and facilitate the sessions.
  • Sourcing relevant IEC materials from specific sectors, other similar programs to get the approvals for printing out and distribution for the orientation sessions for settlements in and outside camps.
  • Compiling and sharing with communities the good and bad practices in terms of fire safety, O&M for shelters and use of NFIs and DRR in shelters and settlements.
  • Identification of volunteer community trainers and facilitators to train them for step down session.
  • Rollout the community campaigns on DRR, Fire safety, energy efficient stoves use and operation.
  • Preparing the training materials and manuals in consultation with the technical team
  • Responsible for reporting the community training component session to Shelter Sector Coordinator on weekly basis.
  • Assisting coordinator for procurement of IEC materials and distribution
  • Preparing and sharing community training calendar with the team to ensure the technical team aware and available to deliver the sessions.
  • Acting as focal point for the outsourced trainings i.e. mud blocks stabilization and another training to plan and support the consultant in delivering the agreed sessions.

Accountability to Beneficiaries:

  • Mercy Corps team members are expected to support all efforts toward accountability, specifically to our beneficiaries and to international standards guiding international relief and development work, while actively engaging beneficiary communities as equal partners in the design, monitoring and evaluation of our field projects.

Accountability:

  • Reports Directly To: Shelter Program Officers
  • Works Directly With: Finance, MEL, Operation, Shelter Team, Field Manager, Program Managers/Directors, Program Quality and Development.

Knowledge and Experience

  • BA/S in Civil Engineering, or other relevant field
  • 1-2 years’ experience working with NGOs.
  • Experience in community trainings and orientations
  • Fluency in both verbal and written English highly preferred. Fluency in Kanuri is required.
  • Multi-tasking, coordination, organization, prioritization skills essential.
  • MS Office utilities skills
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with team members required.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal, intercultural, presentational and communication skills.

S/he will be committed to long-term program sustainability and the delivery of high-impact activities at the community level.
