WaterAid is an international non-for-profit organization dedicated to helping people break free from poverty and disease, unlock their potential and change their lives for good through improved access to clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene. WaterAid started its operation in Nigeria in 1995. Since then it has successfully executed several intervention programmes as outlined by its objectives and has made impact in the lives of the very poor. WaterAid with the country office in Abuja currently works in Bauchi, Enugu and Plateau States with funding from various donors and partners.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Senior Policy Analyst – Governance

Location: Nigeria
Employment type: Contract (Initially for 12 months, with possibility to go permanent.)

Job description

  • Join WaterAid as Senior Policy Analyst – Governance to change normal for millions of people so they can unlock their potential, break free from poverty and change their lives for good. On top of that you’ll be joining a 2020 Great Place to Work® award-winning organisation.
  • This position will be based in the Policy Team that consist of a motivated group of 11 policy analysts, who are passionate about influencing policy change to enable sustainable access to WASH to the world’s poorest and most marginalised people through evidence-based advocacy.
  • As Senior Policy Analyst – Governance, you will lead on WaterAid’s public policy and global advocacy strategies that aim to strengthen the capacity and effectiveness of the sector to deliver sustainable water and sanitation services for all. You will focus on WASH sector governance – generating the evidence and advocating for the conditions necessary for strengthened institutions, policies and sector performance at national and sub-national levels. You will also be conversant with system-strengthening – a way of working that WaterAid is seeking to embed across our work.
  • In this role, you will lead on WaterAid’s Global Strategy Aim on ‘Universal, Sustainable and safe Access at Subnational Level’ work including sector-strengthening as well as oversee Policy and Campaign Department’s contributions to the system-strengthening agenda for WaterAid.

Responsibilities
You’ll also:

  • Lead policy team inputs into the multi-country programme research projects. Work with the WHO and GLAAS teams to submit reports of WaterAid performance against SWA’s Collaborative Behaviours.
  • Provide strategic leadership and guidance across WaterAid including with members of the Directors’ Team and Chief Executives and across the breadth of leadership of our Country Programmes.
  • Provide sector leadership and acting as a recognised authority in sector debates on WASH sector governance.
  • Provide leadership and guidance in shaping national WASH sector planning processes, and bottlenecks preventing the development of an effective and functioning WASH sector in collaboration with the International Programmes Department.

Requirements
To be successful, you’ll need:

  • Substantial experience in public policy fields, particularly in the WASH sector with an exceptional track record of devising and implementing high impact advocacy strategies.
  • Significant knowledge and experience in international development policy and policy-making in lower income and least developed countries.
  • An exceptional ability in critical thinking with experience of originating and proactively promoting credible and pro-poor policy reforms.
  • Proven experience of broader international development policy debates including aid effectiveness, development finance, global ‘sector partnerships and poverty eradication policies in donor agencies and developing countries.
  • A proven track record of conceptualising and delivering high quality, original and intellectually robust research projects in WASH-related filed.
  • Demonstrated strength in strategic planning processes and a record of contributing to organisational reform processes.
  • A team player, able to work responsibly, under pressure, and collaboratively across diverse groups and culture.
  • Working style that reflects WaterAid’s values of Respect, Accountability, Courage, Collaboration, Integrity and Innovation

Remuneration
Salaries and benefits for different countries will vary in line with the location of the successful candidate and depending on experience. The role is within the salary banding of Grade 2 in UK and Grade G in Country Programme.
