Job Title: Legal Counsel (Lawyer)

Location: Lagos

The Role

• We’re looking for a sharp, proactive lawyer who wants more than a desk full of paperwork.
• As our Legal Counsel, you’ll be the legal backbone of a dynamic, international education business.
• You’ll work directly with leadership, marketing, operations, and technology teams, and you’ll help shape how we partner with global institutions, protect our students, and scale across Africa.
  This role suits someone who enjoys variety. One day you’ll be negotiating a partnership agreement with a UK university. The next day you’ll be advising on data protection for our digital platforms or reviewing a campaign before it goes live.

Key Responsibilities

• Contracts and partnerships: Draft, review, and negotiate agreements with partner universities, vendors, service providers, event venues, and other stakeholders, making sure TGM’s interests are protected at every stage.
• Regulatory compliance: Keep the company compliant with relevant Nigerian laws and regulations, including CAMA 2020, the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, consumer protection and advertising rules, and applicable requirements in Ghana and Uganda.
• Data protection and technology: Advise on the handling of student and client data across our CRM, chatbots, apps, and internal platforms. Draft privacy policies, terms of use, and data processing agreements.
• Corporate governance: Manage corporate secretarial matters, including CAC filings, statutory records, board resolutions, and business registrations.
• Employment and HR matters: Support HR with employment contracts, workplace policies, disciplinary processes, and staff-related legal issues.
• Marketing and brand protection: Review marketing materials, campaigns, and public communications for legal risk. Manage trademarks and intellectual property.
• Dispute resolution: Handle client complaints with legal implications, manage disputes, and coordinate with external counsel when needed.
• Advisory: Give clear, practical legal guidance to management and staff, and train teams on compliance best practices.

Requirements

• LL.B Degree and called to the Nigerian Bar (B.L.)
• 2–3 years of post-call experience, preferably in corporate/commercial practice, an in-house legal role, or a law firm with a commercial focus
• Strong contract drafting, review, and negotiation skills
• Working knowledge of Nigerian corporate, employment, and data protection law
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain legal issues in plain language
• Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage several priorities at once
• Willingness to work fully onsite at our Lagos office
• Nice to have: Experience in education, international partnerships, technology, or cross-border transactions; familiarity with UK or Canadian contracting practices; NDPC data protection certification.
