Job Title: Legal and Compliance Officer

Location: Gwarinpa, Abuja (FCT)

Job Description

  • The job responsibilities of a Legal and Compliance Officer generally include ensuring that a company or organization operates within the bounds of applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.
  • They play a crucial role in managing legal risks and ensuring compliance with all relevant laws and standards. Below are some of their key responsibilities:

Responsibilities
Legal Advice and Guidance:

  • Provide legal advice to senior management and departments on various legal issues.
  • Draft, review, and interpret contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Advise on regulatory and legislative changes that could impact the business.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Monitor changes in laws and regulations that may affect the company.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular audits and risk assessments to identify areas of non-compliance.

Risk Management:

  • Identify and assess potential legal risks to the business.
  • Develop strategies for mitigating risks, including compliance training for employees.
  • Work closely with other departments to manage and resolve legal and compliance-related issues.

Training and Awareness:

  • Design and conduct training programs on legal and compliance issues for employees.
  • Promote awareness of legal and regulatory responsibilities across the organization.

Internal Investigations and Reporting:

  • Investigate potential violations of laws, regulations, or company policies.
  • Prepare reports on the outcomes of investigations and recommend corrective actions.
  • Cooperate with regulatory authorities or law enforcement when required.

Contract Management:

  • Review and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Ensure that contracts comply with applicable laws and internal policies.
  • Maintain and organize a system for contract tracking and compliance.

Dispute Resolution:

  • Assist in resolving disputes, including arbitration, litigation, or mediation, when necessary.
  • Represent the company in legal proceedings, when required, or manage external legal counsel.

Corporate Governance:

  • Ensure that the company adheres to corporate governance principles.
  • Advise the board of directors and other senior officials on legal and compliance matters.
  • Oversee the company’s ethical standards and code of conduct.

Reporting to Regulatory Bodies:

  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting to regulatory agencies as required by law.
  • Prepare and file necessary reports with government bodies.

Collaboration with External Legal Counsel:

  • Work with external law firms and legal consultants to handle specific legal issues.
  • Coordinate with external counsel in litigation, regulatory matters, and compliance audits.

Requirements

  • Candidates should possess Bachelor’s Degrees in Law (BL / LLB / JD) with 5 – 10 years relevant work experience.
