Food Security and Livelihood Assistant

Project Duration: 8 months

General Description and Job Brief

The FSL Assistant supports DHCBI’s Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL) program in various field activities, helping to ensure effective implementation of project components, especially those focused on agricultural support, livelihood activities, and community engagement. This role involves directly interacting with beneficiaries, coordinating training sessions, and collecting field data to ensure program quality. Additionally, the FSL Assistant will help facilitate hydroponic training to introduce innovative farming practices to enhance food security in target communities.

Responsibilities

The FSL Assistant will:

  • Program Implementation: Assist in executing FSL activities, including the distribution of agricultural inputs, organization of training sessions, and facilitation of Cash-Based Transfers (CBT) and in-kind support as directed.
  • Beneficiary Support and Training: Provide hands-on support and assistance to beneficiaries during training on agricultural practices, including hydroponic systems for efficient, soil-free crop and fodder production.
  • Hydroponics Training Assistance: Aid in the setup of demonstration plots and the facilitation of hydroponic training sessions, enabling beneficiaries to learn and apply hydroponic techniques for sustainable farming.
  • Community Engagement: Work closely with community leaders and beneficiaries to promote active participation in FSL activities. Help create awareness about the benefits of sustainable agricultural practices and food security initiatives.
  • Monitoring and Data Collection: Collect data during field visits, maintain accurate records of beneficiaries and training attendance, and support the monitoring of project activities.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Provide regular updates to the FSL Officer and Project Manager on activity progress, challenges encountered, and beneficiary feedback.
  • Support with Logistics: Assist in the distribution of materials and equipment, ensuring proper inventory management and documenting all items distributed to beneficiaries.
  • Complaint and Feedback Handling: Help establish and maintain a feedback mechanism for beneficiaries, addressing concerns promptly and relaying issues to the FSL Officer as needed.

Capacity-Building and Quality Assurance

  • Support the FSL team in delivering training and building the capacity of community members in areas like crop management, pest control, and soil conservation.
  • Ensure all training and implementation adhere to DHCBI and donor guidelines for quality and effectiveness.

External Representation

  • Represent DHCBI positively in the community, fostering strong relationships with local stakeholders, including community leaders and partner organizations.
  • Facilitate discussions and promote collaboration with community members to ensure the effective delivery of FSL activities.

Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA)

  • Promote PSEA standards within DHCBI and amongst community members, ensuring a safe environment for all beneficiaries and staff.

Compliance & Ethics

  • Adhere to DHCBI’s compliance and ethics standards and maintain the highest level of integrity in all work activities.

  • Respect and promote gender equality and inclusion in all program activities, ensuring equitable access to resources and opportunities for all genders.

Requirements

  • Education: Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Community Development, Social Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in food security, agriculture, or livelihood support roles, ideally within humanitarian settings.
  • Skills: Strong communication skills, experience in field data collection, and a basic understanding of sustainable agriculture, including hydroponics.
  • Additional: Ability to work in remote field locations and adapt to challenging environments. Previous experience with WFP or other donor-funded programs is an advantage.

Working Conditions

  • Travel: Frequent travel (up to 70%) to project sites in the field.
  • Working Hours: 8-hour workdays, with additional hours as needed based on program demands.
