Job Title: Electrical / Ex (Hazardous Area) Inspector

Role Objective

• Inspect and certify electrical installations and explosion-protected equipment associated with the tank system for safe operation in classified hazardous areas.

Core Roles and Responsibilities

• Conduct detailed electrical and Ex (explosion-protected equipment) inspections of all electrical installations associated with the crude storage tank upgrade, including motors, junction boxes, lighting, and cabling in classified hazardous areas.
• Verify compliance of all Ex-equipment (Ex d, Ex e, Ex ia/ib, Ex n) with the area classification drawings, IEC 60079 series standards, and manufacturer certification (EC-type examination certificates).
• Carry out initial, periodic, and post-repair Ex inspections (visual, close, and detailed per IEC 60079-17) and issue formal inspection certificates/reports.
• Review and audit cable gland installation, IS (intrinsically safe) barrier segregation, earthing/bonding, and cathodic protection interface with electrical systems.
• Investigate and report on any Ex-equipment non-conformances, unauthorized modifications, or loss of certification integrity discovered during inspection.
• Verify hazardous area classification drawings against actual site conditions and flag discrepancies for engineering resolution.
• Support commissioning of electrical systems (transformers, switchgear, motor control centers) feeding the tank automation and lighting systems.
• Maintain the Ex-equipment register and ensure all inspection data feeds into the terminal’s ongoing Ex inspection/maintenance regime.

Qualifications and Requirements
A single missed Ex non-conformance on a live crude terminal is a potential ignition-source risk; requirements reflect zero tolerance for gaps in competence.

• HND/B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering, minimum Second Class Upper (for degree holders); OND holders require a minimum of fifteen (15) years verifiable experience plus full CompEx certification to be considered.
• Mandatory, current CompEx certification covering the full suite: Ex01–Ex04 (installation) AND Ex09–Ex12 (inspection) — partial CompEx certification (installation only, without inspection modules) will not be accepted.
• Ten (10) years of hazardous area electrical experience in oil & gas, with a minimum of five (5) years specifically in an Ex-Inspector role (not installation technician) on live/operational facilities.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of IEC 60079-10 (area classification), IEC 60079-14 (installation), and IEC 60079-17 (inspection and maintenance) sufficient to independently classify and audit hazardous areas without supervision.
• COREN registration (full member) is mandatory for degree-holding candidates; a recognized international Ex competency scheme registration (e.g., EEMUA 231-aligned scheme) is required in addition for all candidates.
• Minimum five (5) years offshore/marine terminal-specific Ex inspection experience — onshore-only Ex experience does not satisfy this requirement given the additional corrosion and atmospheric corrosivity factors offshore.
• Proven, referenceable track record of having personally identified and closed out Ex non-conformances on a minimum of three prior projects, with documentation available for client verification.
• Valid BOSIET/HUET, offshore medical fitness certificate, and readiness for immediate rotational offshore deployment.
• Must pass a practical Ex equipment inspection assessment (live equipment walk-down and defect identification) as part of the interview process — theoretical certification alone is not sufficient grounds for selection.

Mandatory Requirements:

• Qualifications and professional certifications must be issued by recognised bodies, current where applicable, and independently verifiable. Expired, unverifiable or attendance-only certificates will not satisfy a mandatory requirement.
• Candidates must demonstrate recent experience on comparable oil and gas projects. Generic construction experience without direct tank, terminal, refinery, process-plant or offshore exposure will not be accepted.
• Candidates must be able to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, inspection and test plans, permits, risk assessments and applicable codes, and must produce clear technical reports in English.
• Candidates must demonstrate strong process-safety awareness, stop-work discipline, quality ownership and effective collaboration in a live brownfield environment.
• All offshore survival, medical and safety credentials specified for the role must be valid before mobilisation. Any offer remains conditional upon medical fitness, background checks and client approval.
