The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) Abuja is a 500-bed specialty hospital offering world-class comprehensive diagnostics and treatment in oncology, cardiovascular, and haematological care, and general medical and surgical services, along with top notch research and education. The AMCE will provide exceptional care to people on the African continent, regardless of their financial means. Developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in clinical partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust., AMCE Abuja is the first of five centres planned for development in Africa.

We  are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Cyclotron Technician

Location: Abuja

Level: GL 2B

Job Purpose

  • The Cyclotron Technician is responsible for the daily operation, monitoring, maintenance and optimisation of medical cyclotrons and associated equipment within AMCE’s diagnostic facility.
  • The role holder will ensure safe isotope production, compliance with radiation safety protocols, and adherence to international quality standards. Working alongside medical physicists, radiochemists, radiopharmacists and engineers, the technician will play a key role in delivering reliable radiopharmaceuticals to support patient care.
  • This role requires technical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Cyclotron Operation & Isotope Production:

  • Operate the cyclotron according to established protocols for the safe and efficient production of medical isotopes.
  • Monitor system performance and promptly report operational issues.
  • Assist with isotope target loading/unloading and transfer to radiochemistry labs.
  • Maintain production records in line with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting:

  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance tasks on cyclotron systems, chemistry modules, hot cells, and manipulator arms.
  • Support engineers during diagnosis and repair of electro-mechanical, high-voltage, vacuum, and cooling systems.
  • Follow OEM and departmental procedures for scheduled servicing and corrective actions.

Radiation Safety & Compliance:

  • Comply with radiation safety and ALARA principles during all operations.
  • Use radiation survey meters and dosimetry tools to monitor exposure.
  • Adhere to all safety standards set by the Nigerian Nuclear Regularory Authority (NNRA) and international guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with cGMP, EH&S, DOT, and internal SOPs.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Accurately complete maintenance logs, production reports, and regulatory records.
  • Submit work history tickets, timecards, and expense reports in a timely manner.
  • Assist in audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews.

Collaboration & Teamwork:

  • Work closely with physicists, engineers, pharmacists, and nuclear medicine technologists to ensure smooth production workflows.
  • Assist senior technicians and engineers during maintenance and repair activities.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Training & Development:

  • Participate in technical training sessions to improve knowledge of cyclotron operations.
  • Provide peer-to-peer training and support for new staff or junior technicians.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and advancements in cyclotron systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology (Electrical, Mechanical or Mechatronics) is essential.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Physics, Radiography and related technical fields will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a cyclotron technician or related field.
  • Additional certification or training in radiation safety or cyclotron operations preferred.
  • Working knowledge of electronics, digital/analog circuitry, and mechanical systems.
  • Technical aptitude to troubleshoot high-voltage, vacuum, and cooling systems and radiofrequency.

Must have skills:

  • Radiation safety cyclotron operations
