We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Community – Based Transitional Justice Facilitator (Lawyer)

Location: Maiduguri, Borno 

Job Summary

  • The Community-Based Transitional Justice Facilitator (Lawyer) will lead the design, coordination, and facilitation of community-level transitional justice processes.
  • The role involves engaging survivors, community leaders, traditional institutions, civil society actors, and relevant authorities to promote inclusive, survivor-centered, and legally sound justice mechanisms.
  • The successful candidate will ensure that community-based justice approaches align with national laws, human rights standards, and international best practices.

Key Responsibilities
Program Implementation:

  • Facilitate community dialogues, consultations, and forums on transitional justice processes.
  • Support the establishment or strengthening of community-based justice mechanisms.
  • Provide legal guidance to ensure compliance with national and international human rights standards.
  • Integrate survivor-centered and gender-sensitive approaches into all justice processes.
  • Develop frameworks and tools for documentation, truth-telling, and community reconciliation.

Legal Advisory & Technical Support:

  • Provide legal analysis and advisory support on transitional justice issues.
  • Review and draft legal documents, policy briefs, and guidance materials.
  • Support referral pathways between community systems and formal justice institutions.
  • Ensure alignment of traditional justice practices with constitutional and human rights protections.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Engage traditional rulers, religious leaders, women’s groups, youth groups, and local authorities.
  • Build partnerships with legal institutions, bar associations, and justice sector actors.
  • Conduct capacity-building sessions for community actors on rights-based justice approaches.

Documentation, Monitoring & Reporting:

  • Document community processes, lessons learned, and case studies.
  • Prepare periodic technical and narrative reports.
  • Contribute to monitoring and evaluation activities related to justice outcomes.

Safeguarding & Ethics:

  • Ensure confidentiality, informed consent, and survivor protection at all times.
  • Adhere to safeguarding, protection, and ethical standards of the organization.
  • Promote do-no-harm principles in all community engagements.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B); BL qualification and call to the Bar is required.
  • 3–5 years of post-call legal experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in human rights law, transitional justice, access to justice, or peacebuilding.
  • Experience working with community-based or customary justice systems is highly desirable.
  • Strong understanding of gender, conflict sensitivity, and survivor-centered approaches.
  • Experience working in an NGO or the development sector is an advantage.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong facilitation and mediation skills.
  • Excellent legal research and drafting skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in culturally diverse and conflict-affected communities.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and ethical sensitivity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and Kanuri
