Green Habitat Initiative (GHI) is a non-profit non-governmental organization promoting the achievement of SDG 6 (clean water) and SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities) in Nigeria. Incorporated in 2016 in Nigeria, GHI has worked in various sectors such as environmental sustainability, urban planning, sustainable urban development, urban agriculture, social urban innovations, architecture, WASH, solid waste management, recycling activities, environmental activism, etc.

GHI has worked with various local and international partners such as VINNOVA Group Sweden, French Institute Nigeria, Energies 2050, Embassies of Germany, France and Czech, The Water Mechanics, Baze University, One Environment, Stop Don’t Drop, etc. to deliver its projects.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Chief Operating Officer

Location: Abuja (FCT)
Employment Type: Contract
Duration: 12 months (Renewable)
Commencement Date: Immediately

Job Description

  • We are recruiting a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to oversee day-to-day administration of the organization, support the CEO in achieving organizational objectives, execute strategic growth initiatives and ensure effective organizational management.
  • The COO oversees the GHI’s ongoing operations, procedures, policies, and all internal settings. As a vital member of the senior management team, the COO reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He/she establishes policies that promote the organizational’s culture and vision through its operations. The COO is responsible for ensuring operational efficiency, which includes maintaining control of diverse activities and programs as well as establishing and following a set of policies and processes.
  • By setting comprehensive goals for performance and growth, the Chief Operating Officer leads team members and encourages maximum performance and dedication. The COO role is a high-visibility position, requiring strong communication skills and the responsibility of being called upon to represent the organization in the community and the media positively. The COO must maintain the highest level of integrity and lead by example in all areas.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization and occasionally perform the duties of the office of the Chief Executive Officer when the CEO is unable or unavailable
  • Develop, in collaboration with the CEO and the senior management team, an annual operating plan that supports GHI’s long-term operations strategy
  • Provide timely and candid updates of the GHI’s operations and progress towards achieving set goals, including material deviations from the goals or objectives and policies established by the Board
  • Ensure open communication, timely issue resolution, and effective project development
  • Provides timely, accurate and complete reports on the operating condition of the organization
  • Foster a culture that promotes ethical practices, service and encourages individual integrity
  • Maintain a positive and ethical work climate that is conducive to attracting, retaining and motivating a diverse group of team members at all levels
  • Fosters a success-oriented, accountable environment within the organization
  • Coordinate the organizational’s sustainable strategies and manage principal operating risks, such as proposals, projects, and staffing
  • Assist the CEO in ensuring that there is an effective succession plan in place for the COO position and other key executives of the organization reporting to the COO
  • Works collaboratively to develop and/or improve systems, processes, controls and procedures that will enhance the overall efficiency of the organization
  • Assist the CEO in establishing and maintaining an appropriate organizational structure.

Requirements / Skills

  • At least 10 years of professional experience, with 5 years in the nonprofit sector
  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and public speaking skills
  • Mastery of accounting practices with experience in grants management
  • Familiarity with the operational procedures at all levels of the organization
  • A strong analytical and data-driven mindset that translates into leadership skills
  • Ability to inspire team members to live up to their potential and optimize their productivity
  • Sound decision-making and problem-solving skills in pressure situations
  • Demonstrable competency in strategic planning and business development
  • Proven experience in senior management roles or a similar and relevant role.
