Job Title: Africa Business Climate Reporter

Location: Lagos

Job Description

• The Associated Press seeks a talented storyteller to cover the impact of climate change in Africa.
• Reporting to the EMEA business news editor and based in Lagos, Nigeria or Dakar, Senegal, this reporter will focus on issues related to the intersection of climate and business, including how local and foreign entities in Africa are utilizing green finance, entrepreneurship and innovation to sustainably develop.
• The reporter should have a passion for holding corporations to account for the promises and commitments about the changes they are and are not making regarding climate change.

Responsibilities

• In this role, you will tell climate stories with a human lens, putting an emphasis on community-level reporting that shows rather than tells news consumers how to understand one of the most important stories of our time.
• You will thrive as a member of a team that collaborates with journalists of all formats around the world, and you’ll seek to build stories that become better with input from multiple colleagues.
• You will seek to tell stories at the intersection of opportunity, environmental impacts, corporate responsibility and solutions.

We’re looking for someone who will:

• Deliver spot news, features, accountability and enterprise.
• Report on complex topics in a way that can be easily understood and will resonate with diverse audiences around the world.
• Work with a diverse team of journalists to deliver stories across all formats – text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics – from a story’s inception to its publication.
• Have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share on social media.
• Pursue innovative and inclusive coverage strategies while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

Qualifications

• This reporter must be able to explain complex stories in clear and compelling ways and do so swiftly and accurately on tight deadlines.
• You should be comfortable working in multiple media formats, from the field and from the desk, reporting on breaking news as well as beat-driven enterprise.
• You must be able to work effectively as a member of a team.
• Applicants should have at least two years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.

Other Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
• All applicants must be able to work in the assigned location or be able to gain permission to do so.
• Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
• Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
• Basic proficiency in using an iPhone for photos and video is required. Advanced proficiency is a plus.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
