Women for Women International is an International non-governmental organization whose mandate includes providing women survivors of wars, civil strife and other conflicts resources for survival, reduce poverty level and ensure their self-sufficiency. The organization, with headquarters in Washington DC, USA, has country offices in eight countries, including Nigeria. We implement a 12-months training and education program designed to improve key social and economic outcomes for the most socially excluded women. The program targets every aspect of women’s lives; health and wellbeing (including nutrition, hygiene & HIV/AIDS prevention and protection), economic stability, family decision making and social safety nets.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Advocacy Officer

Location: Jos, Plateau
Employment Type: Full-time

Purpose

  • The Advocacy Officer will play a central role in supporting Change Agents and coordinating community and national advocacy efforts. The successful candidate must be experienced in advocacy, understand community dynamics, and have demonstrated advocacy experience.
  • This position will be located in Plateau State, and reports to the Advocacy Coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities
Change Agent Program Implementation and Support:

  • Adapt the Change Agent curriculum to the local context.
  • Work with Change Agents to develop ‘work plans’ for their advocacy efforts and provide frameworks to support planning and monitoring advocacy activities.
  • Manage the annual meeting with Change Agents which will be to support peer-to-peer learning, and for organizational review and learning of the program.
  • Work with NGO partners, in collaboration with the Advocacy Coordinator, to ensure that there are opportunities for Change Agents to become involved in the planning of joint-advocacy strategies.
  • Contribute to the review of advocacy strategies for effective implementation and result delivery
  • Train and mentor Change Agents using the curriculum and in line with best practices and advocacy strategies
  • Facilitate learning across communities and shares lessons learned to review advocacy strategies
  • Collaborate across departmental teams to assess the impact of Change Agents’ activities in the country office.

Joint-Advocacy in Communities:

  • Manage the relationship with NGOs to support advocacy activities that seek to affect change at the community level.
  • Ensure that WfWI participants/graduates are consulted in developing plans in line with the progress of grants.

Joint-Advocacy with National NGOs/Partners:

  • Coordinate consultations between WfWI participants/graduates and national partners to ensure that advocacy objectives are more sensitive/inclusive to the needs of marginalized women.

Inform Key Influencers and Local Donors:

  • Collaborate to map out and build connections with influencers and foreign officials to identify targets for WfWI to build relationships with and also develop a baseline of statements that relate to VAW and WEE by these individuals.
  • Monitor target statements on VAW and WEE to measure change.

Administrative:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date files for advocacy documents.
  • Keep an up-to-date inventory of training supplies and monitor usage in the most effective manner
  • Keep and record Change Agents’ advocacy activities and in the implementation of the community action plan

Others:

  • Adhere to WfWI’s Code of Conduct and Safeguarding Policies and the organizational values Empowerment, Integrity, Respect, Resilience.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should possess a University Degree in the Social Sciences plus a minimum of 3 years of professional experience in the following sectors: social services, education (preferably with adults), psychology, community development, and/or women’s issues.
  • NGO experience is preferable, particularly international NGOs, is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of relevant human rights laws
  • Experience working on community development issues.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize, paying attention to details.
  • Established competence in negotiation and influence.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to ensure effective communication with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in MS Office Applications.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ending violence against women.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in organizing training and working with the community and traditional leaders.
  • Excellent report writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Required oral and written communication skills in English and verbal fluency in Hausa language.
